I wonder how many people still watch NTA’s network news by 9pm? My dad does, and I occasionally join him to. There is this commercial being run on breaks during the news. It mentions the names of renowned leaders, philosophers, activists and trails blazers. They are Martin Luther King Jnr. (MLK. Jnr.) prime minister Lee kuan Yew (PM. LKY) of Singapore, Nelson Mandela (NM) and president Barack Obama (PBO). The announcer talks about change and keeps saying they did it, so therfore, president Goodluck Jonathan(PGJ) can do it.

MLK. Jnr. Led the march against black segregation in the United States that has paid off with that country being ruled by a black man now. PM. LKY formed a vibrant and visionary political party that ruled and led Singapore, a relatively underdeveloped nation without natural resources to a third world Asian industrial tiger. He is one of the most influential figures in Asian politics today. NM paid a sacrifice by giving up his freedom for almost three decades through incarceration. He later gained freedom and took the Republic of South Africa out of the shackles of Apertheid. Then we know all about how with a stroke of genius and charisma PBO became the first black person to rule ‘the world’.

So I have just one question, which is, what movement, achievement, sacrifice, or niche has our PGJ to warrant such comparism? I just laugh out of disdain when ever that advert is run on NTA 9pm news bulletin. It baffles me as well because there is almost no basis for comparism, it is only bloating what he is yet to achieve. The Nigerian populace has entrusted close to six years of governance into his hands. We expected the least of all the numerous promises he made us be kept. Power stability and availability is what our country critically needs to turn things around. We keep on hearing increament in MegaWatts generation but actually the lay Nigerian cannot see it let alone feel it just to charge his mobile phone.

I will not run my emotions high by recounting what is not right with this territory of ours, but I strongly posit that PGJ still has a long way to go for there to be any form of comparism with the above mentioned Sages. Still on the power issue, if before we vote him out of Aso Rock, every nook and cranny of Nigeria can experience a week uninterrupted power supply, then he has done it indeed.
